    Dylan's genius at work. He had it from the mid- '60s until the early '80s.

    I believe the structure created here has everything to do an overarching cypher called "gematria" known or unbeknown to Dylan himself.

      Perhaps. I would be surprised if Dylan intended anything like gematria, but who knows? Thanks.

    Think you should have mentioned his excellent harmonica playing on, I believe it was, "Absolutely Sweet Marie" and, what I consider his best, on the last part of "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands," so emotional and poignant.

      Thank you. The Rypdal tribute site was just a branch from my own personal website. I had the site as a support for my own musical career at the time (schedule of gigs, lessons, recording samples, etc.), and when I ended my own personal music career and switched to full-time chemistry lecturer at the local university, I decided to stop paying the $ to perpetuate my own site.....and any other site that I had branching from it (e.g., the Rypdal tribute site). Before I took the sites down, I asked everyone on my Rypdal mailing list to consider allowing me to transfer all of the files and pages that I'd created for the site to anyone who would volunteer to take over the site. No one offered, so I eventually let it all go. But I direct you to the BEST resource ever for Rypdal fans, and that is the following Facebook site maintained by Morten Mordal who was once a very active member of my Rypdal mailing list: facebook.com/groups/2502614664/ Also, yes, there were complaints by certain individuals in the music press that I had included decades-out-of-print magazine articles on the site and that they should be immediately "taken down" (i.e., people like Steve Lake who apparently preferred that his old articles remain in obscurity....which is completely his right, of course, so I complied with his demand).

    Don’t forget Masterpiece and Watching the river flow! Can you publish your list of westerns?

    • @CalicoSilver
      @CalicoSilver 6 днів тому

      No, James. My westerns spreadsheet is for my reference only, to help me prevent wasting time re-watching a western I didn’t like. The data on that spreadsheet should have no significant appeal or value to anyone other than me. I have learned that I have bad taste in westerns, just as I have bad taste in everything else. Haha!! (For example, I cannot stomach widely-lauded westerns such as Shane, The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Rio Bravo, Once Upon a Time in the West, The Wild Bunch, My Darling Clementine, and many other almost-universally-beloved westerns). See? Now you see why my westerns spreadsheet would be worthless to most fans of the genre.

      The Free Design are in a class all their own, but they were a confluence of many influences common to many other artists at the time, artists that released albums that could be grouped together under what I’ve always considered to be my overall favorite genre-category: sunshine/baroque pop. But with Enoch Light’s production prowess, The Free Design’s albums sound as crisp and perfect as a Steely Dan album. Haha!

      @@CalicoSilver The album is unlike any of his, it’s a perfect blend of pop, jazz, blues and funk. The compositions are unique. John McLaughlin plays an acoustic solo on “Someone.” The end of the album strings several short songs together similar to Abbey Road idea. His compositions after this album became homogenized with only a couple exceptions, Shower the People and Mexico.

      Almost all of the Lou Reed albums are on my top 200 list, I love them so much. I just chose Drella to be the top one for me at this time. I have Drama and just never cared for it. Not sure why, but there it is. The only Stones album I can listen to any time in any mood is Goats Head Soup, but it didn't make my top 50. My reaction to Quadrophenia has always been very personal and subjective so I'm not exactly sure if anything that I say about it would mean anything to anyone else....but it might.....so I definitely need to try reviewing it anyway. Hi Jeff! Love At My Piano! I hear what you're explaining for sure! Also, More Blood, More Tracks. I may look into purchasing the digital downloads of Thomas Dolby and Jimmy Webb. Thank you for your insights! I don't think you would like Chris Whitley but he recorded solo versions from his first album Living with the Law - 1991 (as well as songs from Din of Ecstasy - 1995, and third album Terra Incognita - 1997) in 2004 on a CD called Weed (the posthumously released 2008 - On Air is also superb). Chris didn't want to continue with the overproduction and do what it took to become a famous rock star that his first record may have catapulted him to had he done what the record label executives wanted him to do. Chris went on to undo the fame of his first record for the rest of his life. He wasn't a company man. However, he was a genius songwriter (in my opinion). The solo arrangements on Weed may not be perfect and yet they are. Chris was a perfectionist in his own way but you may not be able to tell. If a person begins with Living with the Law with its sonic production that is supposed to have immediate appeal, Weed may be a disappointment to the general public. Honestly, I didn't even like Chris Whitley when I first heard him. I was a Daniel Lanois fan first. My cousin's husband, from Kentucky, recommended Chris to me and I bought the Living with the Law CD and didn't understand it. Eventually, the poetry hit me like a diamond bullet in my brain (Apocalypse Now reference) and I saw every show I could until he stopped touring and collected all his recordings including CD singles. If I were to recommend Chris Whitley to anyone, I would recommend Weed and On Air first and then go back and listen to his first record. You probably have other artists that affect you in a similar way.

    You answered a question I had for you. I've never understood the fuzz about The Beach Boys. If you too acknowledge the genius of Wilson, I'll give it yet another go. And instead of just listening, I'll try playing along, since that might do the trick.

    • @CalicoSilver
      @CalicoSilver 10 днів тому

      The '60s Beach Boys albums (which are the only albums I've heard by them) have a few songs on each of them that are unbelievably perfect, but they also have songs that are embarrassingly corny. Not even their heralded masterpiece "Pet Sounds" is immune from this. So I have never recommended The Beach Boys to anyone; instead, I simply acknowledge that Brian Wilson has written some of the most beautiful and ingenious pop songs of the 20th century.....and some of the corniest derivative drivel also. I find this to be typical of most geniuses. Haha!

      Yes I love the blend of Santana's and McLaughlin's styles. They are two artists I really enjoyed deeply back in the '70s and still do, so I do love that album.....about half the time.....sometimes I just can't stomach that cheesy fakey religious component.....even the cover of the album makes me roll my eyes. I understand and appreciate their desire to "seek higher" than the merely earthly-vulgar and selfish world around us, but the way they so cheesily do so just comes across as vacuous hoity-toity posturing to me. And I'm pretty sure that they have both benefited greatly from the very earthly/selfish aspects of luxury that they claim to eschew, all the while wearing their virginal white duds and speaking with their soothing sage-vocal tones, haha! Great talents, yes, but so unintentionally and humorously transparent. And again, I say all of this as a huge fan of their music.

      I find that if we just give them time (sans our stupid knee-jerk "corrective" input....i.e., opening our foolish mouths), they will eventually realize on their own if they are right or wrong. Our problem as partners is plunging headlong into the situation with our vocal "correction" before they've been given time to do it themselves. This holds true for most people, but especially for our loved ones. It comes across as being disrespectful (even when it is well-intended) and women understandably recoil at what they perceive to be disrespect from men. A measure of stoic patience always pays off, I find. (But I struggle constantly to adhere to this....I even have a sign on the wall where I'll see it everyday that says "shut up")
